Paid Parental Leave – employers to make payments from 1 July 2011

A Private member’s bill which sought to continue Centrelink’s role in making payments under the Government’s Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme has been defeated in the Parliament. From 1 July 2011, employers will be required to make PPL payments which until that time are being made by Centrelink unless the employer has already agreed to start processing such payments. Employers should ensure that they are familiar with their responsibilities and have registered with Centrelink where payments will be required to be made to any of their employees. Information is available to employers on the Centrelink PPL website.
